Miller-Valentine Construction Earns ABC National Safety Designation
Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) of Ohio Valley today announced that Miller-Valentine Construction has achieved the Diamond level of ABC’s prestigious Safety Training and Evaluation Process (STEP) program—the pinnacle of safety performance in the construction industry. Miller-Valentine Construction’s executives will be presented with the award and recognized in front of a group of industry peers at ABC’s After Hours event on Wednesday, 11/28/12, at Eddie Merlot’s in Cincinnati, Ohio.
To achieve ABC’s STEP Diamond level, among other requirements, a company must have a total recordable incident rate at least 50 percent below North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) industry averages for each of the previous three data years, maintain an Experience Modification Rate (EMR) of 0.700 or below, submit their official U.S. Department of Labor, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Forms 300 and 300A on work-related injuries and illnesses for review, and achieve a specific STEP score. On average, only 5% of national STEP applicants meet the stringent criteria to qualify for STEP Diamond. Miller Valentine is one of only two member companies to receive the Diamond award in Ohio.
“It is an honor and a privilege to be able to recognize Miller-Valentine Construction for their STEP Diamond achievement,” said Ohio Valley ABC President John Morris. “These companies have used the STEP program to evaluate and strengthen their safety programs and have proven themselves leaders in the journey towards a zero-incident jobsite. Miller-Valentine Construction’s safety performance is at the top of the construction industry and their continued dedication to providing a safe workplace for their employees furthers ABC’s mission to help our members win work and perform that work safely, ethically and profitably.”
STEP was established in 1989 by the ABC National Environment, Health & Safety Committee to assist ABC member contractors in evaluating and improving corporate safety practices and recognize outstanding safety training efforts. STEP awards are presented annually in six categories: Participant, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum and Diamond. Each year, over 2,000 contractors of various sizes participate in the STEP program.
