Ohio Earns Gold Shovel Award with Industrial Building Construction Projects
Each year, Area Development magazine sponsors Gold and Silver Shovel Awards to acknowledge states that excel at attracting investment for job creation. By evaluating states’ top-10 job-creation and investment projects based on a variety of factors, including new jobs created relative to population size and diversity of industries represented, among others. Competition this year, says Area Development, was fierce. In an article announcing the winners, the publication said, “States and localities understandably have raised their general expectations with the U.S. economy generating stronger growth prospects, confidence in American manufacturing on the rise, and a number of high-profile siting, expansion, and relocation decisions fueling economic development pursuits.” And Ohio was one of the select few to earn Gold Shovel recognition in the population of 8- to 12-million category—and two Miller-Valentine Group industrial building construction projects helped Ohio secure the win.
Fuyao Glass America Expansion Adds 750 Jobs in Moraine
One of the projects that played a role in securing the Gold Shovel is the $130 million expansion of the manufacturing facility for automotive windshields. Miller-Valentine Group was selected to lead the construction project, having worked on renovations to the former General Motors plant in the past. Miller-Valentine Construction was hired as the agency Construction Manager for the project, working jointly with Woolpert as the project designer. In addition to overall construction management services, Miller-Valentine completed numerous self-performed and design-build projects in the plant. One of these projects was the design and construction of a tilt-up tunnel system running throughout the plant to speed up collection and removal of glass from the manufacturing floor. At the time, Miller-Valentine President of Construction Chris Knueven said, “This tilt-up tunnel design solution will save time and money, and was designed specifically for Fuyao’s needs.” Miller-Valentine Construction has continued to perform various projects at the Fuyao plant, including 123,000 SF of building additions, structural steel work, equipment foundations, and concrete work.
NuVasive Picks West Carrollton for Manufacturing Facility Build
The San Diego-based medical device manufacturer NuVasive considered sites in Tennessee, Texas and abroad prior to selecting West Carrolton as the site for a new $45 million spinal implant and instrument manufacturing facility. The project gives a boost to an already growing bio health industry in Ohio. When complete, the facility will feature 300 jobs to the area including skilled, high-tech positions.
The new facility will house advanced, high-tech equipment including 100 CNC machine tools and CMM inspection equipment along with clean-room operations.
On learning of the award for the state, Chris Knueven said, “We are honored to be chosen by these companies to help grow their business in Ohio.” With more than 30 million square feet of industrial building construction experience, Miller-Valentine understands the unique—and often complex—needs of manufacturing customers across a diverse range of industries. And we look forward to future opportunities to support economic development for the communities we serve. For more information, contact Chris Knueven, President, at 513.583.4749.
