Construction begins on expansion project for Excelitas Technologies

Miller-Valentine Construction has been selected as the construction contractor for a proposed 38,000-square-foot expansion project for Excelitas Technologies. The project will add office, lab and manufacturing space for Excelitas, and will increase the company’s footprint at Mound Business Park by more than 75 percent.

Excelitas specializes in photonic technology solutions. Its Miamisburg location serves defense and aerospace clients with the design, manufacturing, and testing of energetic safety systems such as electronic safe, arm and fire devices and firing modules, ignition safety devices, custom energetics, and Blue Chip detonators.

“We are very excited to be selected as the Excelitas and Miamisburg Mound Construction partner on this project,” said Dave Dickerson, President – Midwest Business Development for Miller-Valentine. “We’re happy to see companies like Excelitas thrive in the Dayton region.”

Excelitas currently occupies five buildings across the Mound. This construction project will expand the existing complex, enabling the company to add manufacturing lines to fulfill orders from recent project awards.

“The new space will help us meet increasing demand,” explained Doug Benner, Executive Vice President, Defense and Aerospace, Excelitas Technologies. “We’re excited to meet our customers’ growing needs from Miamisburg.”

The defense contractor has operated from the Mound for more than 25 years and is the campus’ largest employer. In planning for the expansion, Excelitas also signed a 10-year commitment to the site.

Construction will be completed by the end of 2020. The Mound has undergone over $1 billion in improvements since the U.S. government left the property in the 1990s. For more than 50 years, the 306-acre campus was a premier site for nuclear and space research. Today, it houses a museum, a creative agency, a county dispatch center and several research and development firms.
